Testing

Congratulations 2nd graders!  We finished taking the CST yesterday and I am so proud of everyone.  I know everyone took their time and did their best work.  You deserve to celebrate your accomplishment.

We will continue with APRENDA testing next week (Tuesday 5/15-Monday 5/21).  All dual immersion students, grades 2-6, in Chula Vista will be taking the APRENDA.  We use this test to measure students’ progress in Spanish.  Again, during this time we will not be sending home homework.  It is important for students to get a good-night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive to school on time.

Ending the 3rd Quarter

Once again, it has been a pleasure working with your children this quarter.  I have enjoyed meeting with your families during our conferences and talking about the wonderful progress everyone is making in second grade.  To be honest, I get sad thinking that I only have one quarter left of the school year to work with this exceptional group of students.

Our student teacher, Miss Smith, has also enjoyed working with our class this quarter.  She will be a welcomed addition to the teaching profession.  Her hard work this quarter has been greatly appreciated.  Miss Smith will be returning after break to complete her student teaching assignments.

I hope that everyone has a fun and restful Spring Break!  We’ll see you in April!

Welcome Back!

Happy New Year to our second grade Immersion families!  There are some new and exciting changes in our classroom!  We have been extending a warm welcome to Danielle Smith.  Miss Smith is a teaching credential candidate from USD and will be student teaching in our class until the end of the school year.  She will be working closely with Mrs. Ellison and our students as part of her preparation in becoming a teacher.  She is a wonderful addition to our classroom.

Mrs. Rubi and her family welcomed a beautiful baby GIRL in December!  Ms. Diaz is substitute teaching for Mrs. Rubi while she is on maternity leave.  Ms. Diaz is very familiar with the students and staff at Hedenkamp and we are happy to have her with us.

On Thursday, January 26th we will be going on our first field trip of the new year!  We will be going to the Balboa Theatre in downtown San Diego to watch the Classics for Kids concert, Mozart Masterworks.  The concert will combine a live, professional orchestra and actors to narrate the childhood story of young Wolfgang Mozart and his older sister, Nannerl.  Mrs. Ellison will be performing in the show, playing the part of Maria Anna Mozart, Wolfgang’s mother!  The part of Wolfgang will be played by Hedenkamp student, Eric Simmons.  Nannerl will be played by former Hedenkamp Husky, Mariana Simmons.

Since Mrs. Ellison will be performing in the show, Mrs. De La Torre will be substitute teaching and taking her class on the trip. Mrs. De La Torre has been a part of the Hedenkamp community for many years and has a lot of teaching experience and familiarity with our Immersion students.  They will be in good hands!

If you would like to return to the Balboa Theatre for an encore performance of Mozart Masterworks with the whole family, there will be a family performance on Sunday, January 29 at 2 p.m.  For more information on ticket prices, follow the link below.

Welcome Back!!!

Welcome back from Fall Break!  I hope that everyone had a fun, relaxing break from school.  We had a great first day back and we are already into the swing of things.  Students brought home a new homework menu today for second quarter.  I will also post it on our homework page.   Students also brought home a book order today. If you are interested in ordering any books, please return a completed order form no later than October 2oth.

October is going to be a busy month!  Due to the blackout in September, our Dual Immersion Ice Cream Social was canceled.  It has been rescheduled for this Friday, Oct. 14th.  We hope that you can make it!

We will be going on a field trip this month, on October 24th, to the Olympic Training Center.  Due to the increase in class size and the limited space in the classroom at the OTC, we are not able to have any chaperones join us on this trip.  We will be sending home a permission slip and more information soon.

The annual Hedenkamp Husky Howl will be on Friday, October 28th.  Please let us know if you are available to volunteer for this event.

Happy Autumn!

Box Tops

We are collecting “Box Tops” for our school!  For each “Box Top” that your child brings in, our school will receive 10 cents.  Our Student Council would like to use the funds that we earn to purchase new playground and P.E. equipment for all Huskies to use.  As an incentive, the primary and upper-grade classes that bring in the most “tops” will win a Z-Pizza Party!  How fun!  Make sure to label the “tops” with our classroom number, 402.

Character Award – Respect

Congratulations to Ethan for earning this month’s Character Reward of Respect from Room 402.  Ethan is a young gentleman and always remembers to use “please” and “thank you” in both English and Spanish.  He also demonstrates respect when helping his fellow classmates and his teachers.  Ethan takes good care of his classroom materials, especially books!  He makes sure that others will be able to enjoy the same books for many years to come.  We all look up to Ethan and are proud of him for being such a great role model.
